I have examined how non-native English speakers produce English in an adversed communicative setting. In every day, fluent communication could be compromised due to either extra-linguistic factors (e.g., background noise) or intra-linguistic factors (e.g., the existence of a lexical competitor such as sheep vs. ship), or both. To overcome these obstacles, non-native English speakers need to spontaneously modify speaking styles in their L2 so that they can increase an intelligibility of acoustic signals for listeners. Ultimately, I want to reveal how non-native English speakers behave as an active and successful interlocutor in these situations.
More recently, I'm also delving into lexical retrieval abilities in older adults, which is a shared motif of cognitive science, psycholinguistics, and speech-language-hearing sciences. In particular, I examine how cognitively-healthy older adults' social connectedness can impact their language functions.
